Why Is My Grout Turning Orange or Brown?
You mop the floor. You scrub the shower. The grout still has an orange line running through it.
Orange grout points to iron in the water, not to dirt and not to mildew. The EPA lists reddish or orange staining as the noted effect of iron above 0.3 mg/L, and that iron soaks into the pores of the grout and dries there. Florida sets its drinking water standard for iron at 300 micrograms per liter, which is a tiny amount, and even that little is enough to stain fixtures reddish brown.

Is your grout stain rust or is it mildew?
Look at two things. The color, and the spot.
Mineral stain is orange, rust red or tan. It shows up where water runs and dries. The shower floor. The lip of the tub. The tile right under the shower head.
Growth looks different. It is dark, grey or pink. It starts in corners, along the bottom of a shower wall, and in lines that stay damp and never get air.
There is a free test. A mineral stain does not fade when you wipe it with a wet cloth, and it comes back in the exact same shape every time. Growth spreads and changes shape.

Why does well water turn grout orange?
Because the water carries iron, and grout is porous.
Groundwater here carries iron. In ground with little oxygen it stays dissolved, so you cannot see it in the water. UF/IFAS Extension calls that form ferrous iron and notes it is common in oxygen free ground.
Then the water reaches your shower. It meets air. It dries on the tile. The iron does not dry away with it. It stays in the pores of the grout.
The Florida Department of Health puts a number on it. Iron as low as 300 micrograms per liter leaves reddish brown stains on plumbing fixtures, tableware and laundry that are very hard to remove. That is the same water rinsing your grout every day.
The same fact sheet adds a line that matters here. There is no required sampling of private drinking water wells. A family can live with iron in the water for years and never test it. The orange ring in the shower is often the first real clue.
Why is my grout turning brown instead of orange?
Brown to near black usually points at manganese.
The EPA lists guideline levels for both. Iron sits at 0.3 mg/L, and the noted effect is a rusty color with reddish or orange staining. Manganese sits at 0.05 mg/L, and the noted effect is a black to brown color with black staining. These guidelines cover how water looks and tastes, not health.
USGS says it plainly. Iron adds a rusty, reddish brown or sometimes yellow color. Water that is more black than red likely holds iron and manganese together.
One more stain gets mixed in with these. A chalky white or tan crust on floor grout is usually efflorescence. The Tile Council of North America describes it as minerals that dissolve in water and travel to the surface of the grout as the water evaporates. Those minerals usually start in the concrete slab under the tile.
Why does the stain land in the same spots every time?
Because the water decides where it lands, not the dirt.
Follow the water and you find the stain. The shower floor. The tile under the shower head. The base of a toilet. The edge of a sink where drips run down. Anywhere water sits and then dries.
That is also why it returns in the same shape after you scrub. You took off what was on top. The water put more back in the same place the next week.
Efflorescence does it from the other side. Water moves up through the slab and the grout, evaporates at the surface, and leaves the minerals behind.
Why did bleach and the mildew spray do nothing?
Because those products are built for growth, and this is metal.
Bleach and mildew sprays kill and lighten living stains. A mineral deposit is not alive. It does not answer. You can spray it, wait, wipe it, and the orange is still sitting there.
Going harder carries a real risk. Strong acidic products do lift mineral stains, but they damage natural stone. Travertine, marble and slate all react badly to acid, and that damage does not wash off. It is why we identify the floor on site before any product touches it.

Does county water or a private well change this?
It changes everything about what you see.
The Collier County Water Sewer District treats its water. The county filters and softens its water before it reaches your tap. Its 2024 report names nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and lime softening, run on water drawn from the North Hawthorn, South Hawthorn and Golden Gate Tamiami wellfields. That leaves it fairly soft. Hardness ran 42 to 94 mg/L in 2024, an average of 67, or 2.4 to 5.5 grains per gallon. The district serves 86,947 connections and about 228,000 people.
Golden Gate Estates is a different story. A 2023 study prepared for the Golden Gate Estates Area Civic Association reports that few properties there receive water service. That covers 33,567 people across more than 53,500 acres and more than 23,900 lots, most of them single family homes on private wells and septic.
So two homes a few miles apart can have very different grout. One gets treated water. The other gets raw groundwater, untreated and untested. You can see that in the Estates homes we clean on well water.
What can a deep cleaning change, and what can it not?
A cleaning removes the deposit. It does not change your water.
A cleaning solution is left to break down the deposit, the grout lines are agitated, and hot water extraction pulls the loosened minerals back out in the same pass. On an iron stain the dwell time matters more than the scrubbing does.
In Estates homes we often add an extra rinse and neutralizing pass so the floor finishes bright instead of hazy. Census records of when those homes were built put most of that grout at 15 to 35 years old. It has had a long time to collect minerals.
Here is the honest part. If your water keeps delivering iron, the color comes back on the water's schedule. A cleaning resets the surface. It is not water treatment, and that is not work we do. What we can tell you is what your grout looks like under the stain.

Is Dawn dish soap bad for grout?
It is not bad for grout, but it is the wrong tool here. Dish soap is a degreaser. It lifts body oil and soap film, which is real work in a shower. It does nothing to a metal deposit. It also leaves a film that grabs soil if you do not rinse it well.
Are orange stains permanent?
Often they lift. The deposit sits in the pores of the grout, and hot water extraction pulls loosened material back out in the same pass. Grout that is cracked or crumbling is a different problem. Cleaning does not fix broken material, and no honest cleaner will tell you it does. What your grout will do is a question we answer on site, for free.
Why is my grey grout turning orange?
Grey and white grout show mineral color first because nothing hides it. Darker grout collects the same deposit, but it reads dull or muddy instead of orange. That is why owners of dark grout often notice the problem much later, when the whole floor looks flat.
